Police seize gas canisters after one explodes and take them TO police HQ

DOZENS of streets were closed and the police HQ in Durrington was evacuated after officers decided to transport a cluster of paint ball gas canisters there.

Police had received a report of a canister being let off and raided the home of a 40-year-old Yapton man, where they found several explosive devices last Thursday.

They arrested the man and transported the gas canisters, believed to be inert, to Centenary House, for collection by the Bomb Disposal Unit.

Police spokeswoman Jill Pedersen said: "These were initially assessed by officers to be safe to be relocated to Centenary House. Bomb disposal officers, on collecting the items, felt they needed to assess the items closely and the building was evacuated to comply with health and safety procedures."

The devices were placed in a secure area outside the building where bomb disposal experts carried out a closer examination to decide whether a controlled explosion needed to be carried out.

Police said residents were not evacuated, but householders sitting outside the cordoned-off zone said they had been told to leave their homes.
