Pony races bring on future riders

Pony races have rapidly become a star attraction as part of the card at point to point and race meetings.

They are aimed at encouraging young and would-be jockeys to the thrills of racing.

To qualify, children and ponies must have been hunting together with a local pack at least four times in the current season.

This is important not only because of the close links between hunting and racing, but also from the point of view of safety as hunting teaches young people how to control their ponies especially when riding across country in the company of others.
