Poulter prize is perfect for young golfer Bullen

The competition was open to boys and girls under 18 with a handicap of 16 or less, with the winner qualifying to play in the Poulter event at Woburn on Monday, July 18.

The winner was Mike Bullen from Chichester’s sister club, Hill Barn in Worthing, so he will be off to Woburn next month. He is pictured receiving his prize from James Martin.

Each player was given a box of golf balls for participating.

Chichester have a large junior section and hold regular competitions on both 18-hole courses at the club as well as the nine-hole short course for younger or less experienced players.

Chichester GC’s ladies’ teams have been busy with matches. Following their home win against Cuckfeld, the division-three team travelled for the return match and gained a creditable draw.

Both the division-one and two teams in the past week travelled to Highwoods GC in Bexhill. The division-two team were more successful, gaining a draw.

The division-one team started with a disadvantage: they were one team member short as well as having two regular members unavailable. Highwoods fielded a very strong team including two county players.

Highwoods came out on top with a clean sweep in all six games played.

BOGNOR

The popularity of the annual Men’s Over-50 open team event continues to grow.

This year’s entry was 168 – 20 more than last year – with participants in teams of four.

They were from 25 clubs in Berkshire, Hampshire, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. The overall open team winners with a score of 119 were from Gatton Manor – Tony Braid, Laurie Oakley, Dennis Saunders and Tony Teiger.

A team from Rowlands Castle were second on 117, and third were the Copthorne/Gatton Manor team on 114.

The weather was perfect and congratulations on the organisation, catering and the excellent condition of the course were received from visitors.

There were 32 entrants for the annual Bert Reid 36-hole competition. Despite wind and rain, Shaun Maskell achieved a superb first round of 65 and won the trophy with a score of 142. Second was Andrew Field on 148, third Brian Arnell on 150. The plate, for handicaps of ten and over, was won by Oliver Longlands on 153, with Stuart Bell second on 162 and Jack Bingham third on 167.

In their most recent match, the veterans lost 7-1 at Corhampton.

The winner of the Junior Club Championship, the 36-hole scratch event, was 18-year-old James Ashman, a one-handicapper, with a total score of 148. Runner-up was 15-year-old eight-handicapper Jordan Vincent on 156 ahead of 18-year-old nine-handicapper Dan Hoare on 170.

The winner of the 18-hole medal was Vincent with a nett 65.

George Bingham, who is 12 and has a handicap of 28, was second on 67 and 14-year-old Marcus Embleton, handicap 23, was third on 70.

Because of the windy conditions an 18-hole stableford for those with a handicap over 29, was reduced to 14 holes.

The winner was Matt Kissell and runner-up James Woosley – both 12-year-olds. Some 15 juniors took part.

Seventy-four ladies competed in a Stableford at Bognor. Ladies of 70 and over were also competing for the Elliott Methuselah Trophy.

AVISFORD PARK

In the senior Stableford, division-one winner was Peter Redford with 37 points and in division two, Michael Joyce won with 44 points.

The club medal was won in division one by Roger Boorer with nett 67 and in division two by Tim Grinstead with 60.

The midweek medal was won by John Thomas with nett 67.
