President of the Lawn Tennis Association visits Uckfield Tennis Courts
The directors of Urban Tennis Foundation - Dan Elson and Simon Trott, were delighted to welcome the President of the LTA - Cathie Sabin, to the new, revitalised, park courts in Victoria Pleasure Ground Uckfield on Saturday
Also, in attendance were Uckfield Councillors - Ian Smith and Keith Everett, and UTF members Pro Das, Nikki Hughes, Mike Ziolek & Debbie Ziolek (Uckfield FM), and Jo & Livie Trott. Particular thanks was paid to Tom O’Riordan for his hard work in preparing the courts in the days leading up to the visit.
Despite the weather, Cathie Sabin was given a warm welcome and was shown the new courts with their impressive rebound practice wall that is the first of its type in Sussex. Cathie much enjoyed seeing Livie enjoying the rebound wall inspite of the weather.
Cathie gave a short speech on the importance of improved facilities to grass roots tennis and complimented Simon on his efforts to get the project launched.
Later that day, the UTF team collected the Best Community Venue prize at the Tennis Sussex Awards 2015 being hosted by Heart DJ - Jack the Lad, at the AMEX stadium in Brighton. Winning this prize means that Urban Tennis will now be placed into the national Aegon British Tennis Awards. A win here is worth a £5,000 grant to further improvement the facilities.
Separately, the new Uckfield tennis facilities have also been entered into the Fields in Trust national competition for the Most Improved Park site and
A very happy Simon said: “After seeing you yesterday, the UTF team were invited to the Annual Awards ceremony of Tennis Sussex at the AMEX stadium Saturday night, 14th November 2015. We won the Best Community Tennis Venue Award for 2015 !! This means we came first out of 96 LTA registered tennis venues in all of Sussex. Yippee! I was a runner up for the Best Volunteer Award 2015.”
