Rain means anglers can reign on the Rother

A good deal of rain over the past couple of weeks has improved conditions in the Rother and the Arun, as well as providing a good top-up in Petworth's & Bognor Angling Club's ponds and lakes, which were looking low.

As a result good catches have been recorded, in particular at the club’s stretches on the Rother, where veteran committee member Ray Newnham had five good chub - all over the 4lb mark - from below Shopham bridge.

Despite getting a good soaking on a wild and windy day, he brought the fish into his swim and the five take his haul of chub to 30-plus so far this season.

The barbel in the Rother seem to have moved, with four good fish coming in one day from the lower Coates Castle stretch, while Coultersahaw catches are below average – partly due, perhaps, to work being carried out at the mill, where water flow has been restricted.

This will continue until at least November with the installation of a new water turbine that will improve the flow of the river.

The club’s match anglers continue to do well at all levels, but the club would like to see new faces.

Details of forthcoming matches can be seen at www.sussexangling.co.uk.

The match for the Daniels Rose Bowl was held at Petworth Park, where bream expert Kevin Leighfield drew his favourite peg and landed a winning 39lb 3oz, closely followed by Denis Hurley two pegs away with a catch of tench and bream at 26lb 3oz.

Third was Steve Hanson, who caught one of Petworth’s rare carp weighing just under 5lb – his total being 20lb 1oz.

THREE COUNTIES LEAGUE

THERE were two exceptional nets of fish from the Rother at Stedham, which produced the best match weight from the Rother for many years for Stedham club member Mick White, who landed 15 chub for 39lb 4oz and admitted to losing three fish he says would have taken him to 50lb. K Wickens from Oakhanger caught an all-perch total of 11lb 5oz. Petworth’s match secretary Steve Simmonds took third.
