They won the league title by ten points from Worthing.

Pavilion B clinched the division-two title and are promoted into division one with runners-up Arundel, replacing Storrington and Petworth.

Champions Lancing and Worthing B went up from division three with Field Place and Middleton dropping down from two.

Worthing won the LG League PC Cup on the league’s presentation day at Worthing Pavilion. They beat Norfolk 91-66 in the final.

Littlehampton Gazette League chairman Chris Rolph said: “It’s been a good year and the league continues to go from strength to strength.

“It was traumatic with our secretary, Rod Jamieson, dying last November but I took on the secretary role again and had help from results co-ordinators – Rod McBeth, Lew Mockett and Brian Heal. Without their help, the league would have struggled.

“We’ve had another application for next season, so could possibly rise to 21 clubs and 29 teams if they are accepted.

“I think it’s the best league in Sussex now. You listen to people who talk about it around the county and everyone will agree that it’s a good, strong, competitive league.”

In the champions versus the rest clash, Chichester, Pavilion B and Lancing joined forces for a 133-104 win.

WITTERINGS

Witterings welcomed teams from Arundel, Bognor, Emsworth, Lancing, Little Spain, Maltravers, Norfolk, Pagham, Rogate and Telepost plus two home club teams for their ladies invitation tournament on a grey and windy afternoon.

Each team played three rinks of eight ends and the winning team were Lancing, with Little Spain a very close second.

On Witterings’ finals weekend, matches were very competitive.

MIDDLETON

Middleton Bowls Club’s finals were played over two days.

The ladies’ finals were dominated by Joan Gower, the section’s captain, who took the two and four-wood titles and teamed up with Ray Payne and skip Ron Wootton to claim the triples. The ladies’ pairs were won by Doris Jenkins and Irene Smith.

The mixed pairs were a family affair, Andrew and Jane Nurse losing to Ron and Mary Wootton. The captain’s Trophy went to Bob Murray.

The men’s four-wood pairs were scooped by Rick Wheeler and Andrew Nurse, while Ron Wootton took the two-wood title.

The men’s four woods provided a real cliffhanger. Trevor Finch scored four to lead 16-11 but John Wilson played himself back into it at 19-19 on the 25th end. Wilson took the 26th but Finch took the ;ast two for a 21-20 victory.

The second day produced some rain but this didn’t deter members and friends from turning out to see some competitive bowling.

The annual captain-versus-president’s match also featured president Ann Steventon’s charity day, with proceeds going to the Chestnut Tree House hospice. The captain’s side won 110-101.

Meanwhile, the annual match for the Helmann Trophy was played at Cowplain. The mixed triples match, played on six rinks, saw Cowplain take the trophy 113-96, although the rinks were shared 3-3.

CRABLANDS

Crablands Ladies 65 Crablands Men 88

The annual battle of the sexes took place on a windy and eventually wet afternoon. When the game was cut short at 16 ends, the men were the victors.

Final results for the C&M League saw Crablands ladies finish in second place. In the BM League, Crablands have been promoted to division one. In the Littlehampton Gazette League, Crablands stay in the same division.

On a sunny afternoon a good game was enjoyed with all four Crablands rinks winning. Top rink was skipped by Derek Adams.

Telepost’s latest outings resulted in a win and a defeat. They won 86-51 at home to Wittering but lost 83-58 at Crablands.

BROOKS MOTORS LEAGUE

The race for the division-one title went right to the final game and Pulborough, after a good home win against Aldingbourne, went to Arundel needing a win for the title. Arundel needed as many points as possible from the game to avoid relegation.

Pulborough continued their good late-season form and took all six points to give them the title and leave Arundel relegated with Aldingbourne.

In division two the final game between Bognor and Fishbourne was rained off but Fishbourne had already won the league and finished the season with an unbeaten record. Fishbourne and Crablands are promoted.

ARUNDEL

Arundel ladies held a charity day to raise money in aid of breast cancer. Teams from a number of local clubs were invited to wear something pink, and they didn’t disappoint.

The day raised £260 and the deputy mayor of Arundel, Ann Harriot, presented the prizes. Petworth ladies – Bobbie Bonnar, Lesley Napper and Sue Miles, aka the Petworth Fairies – were voted best-dressed team.
