The Battel Bonfire Boyes-organised event, which started in 2009, attracted its biggest ever field and produced a new course record time.

More than 420 runners made their way around the 10k course, which started in Battle High Street and headed along Powdermill Lane towards Catsfield before returning to Battle via North Trade Road for the finish.

The sun shone all morning, which brought spectators out in vast numbers to cheer the runners on.

The course record, which had been set by Daniel Anderson in 2011, was broken by Josh Guilmant, from Brighton Phoenix, by three seconds with a time of 32:47.

Gary Foster (Hastings AC) was second in 37:06 and Stuart Piper (Hastings Runners) was third in 37:28. Sue Fry (Hailsham Harriers) was the leading lady in 40:36.

The junior race - which took place before the main 10k - saw 42 young runners make their way up and down Battle High Street.

BBB spokesman Matt Southam said: “It was an amazing day. It was the busiest race we’ve held and we’ve had some fantastic feedback from runners. The spectators helped to create this fantastic atmosphere on the Abbey Green.

“We would like to thank everyone who helped make the day a success, particularly the main sponsors Holland & Harper and Littlewood Fencing; Hastings Athletic Club for organising the start and finish of the race, Battle Muffin Club for marshaling, The British Red Cross for the first aid support and RAYNET for assisting with communication.”
