Record run in seafront race

A NEW course record was set in the fifth leg of Bexhill Runners' Seafront Six race series on Sunday morning.

Chris Illman, of Cirencester AC, posted a new mark of 35 minutes and 17 seconds in a 10K race which was the penultimate in the series.

Second home was Henry Mountcastle (Hastings AC) in 36.30, followed by local runner and winner of last year's 10K event, Otto Haas, in 36.39.

First lady home was Gill Wheeler, of Hailsham Harriers, also in a course record time of 39.14, ahead of runner-up Natasha Swan (Arena 80) in 44.21 and third-placed Viv Moriarty (unattached) in 44.47.

There was another strong turnout, with 206 finishers, including 31 members of Bexhill Runners who were led home by 15-year-old Andrew Woods, a pupil at St Richard's Catholic College, in seventh place overall in 38.20. Second Bexhill Runner was Danny Garbett in 8th, followed by Dan Henchy in 14th.

The main race was preceded by 500m, 1K and 2K children's races, which had a total of 49 finishers. Winner of the 500m version was six-year-old Luke Soden in 2.15, first in the 1K race was 12-year-old Jade Rose in 3.37, while the winner of the 2K race was 12-year-old Elisha Robinson in 9.19.

The final leg of the Seafront 6 is the 10-mile 'Beachbuster' event on Sunday November 19. Entry forms can be downloaded from Bexhill Runners' website - www.bexhillrunners.co.uk - and need to be returned no later than the preceding Friday, but runners will be able to sign up on the day.

Jane Molton finished seventh overall in the ladies' series and second in the senior ladies category at the Rye Summer Classic Series.

Daniel Crosby finished 13th overall in the men's series and third in the junior men's category, while Jonathan Molton came 21st overall in the men's series.

David Crosby finished 30th overall in the men's series and third in the men's veteran one category and David Rogers came 73rd overall in the men's series.
