In total, 562 athletes completed the course which eclipsed last year’s record number by 87.

The event, which is part of the West Sussex Fun Run League, sees runners gather on Littlehampton’s West Green for a loop around a circuit before heading along the seafront and back to finish.

It seemed records were tumbling everywhere for the race with winner Dean Heneghan’s time of 26min 33sec the best ever.

The newly signed Crawley runner was delighted to come out on top and said: “It was a nice race, I wasn’t expecting it to be as tricky as it was but I’m pleased to win.

“I’d never done this race before so wasn’t sure what to expect but to win was so much more than I had anticipated.

“I’ve done a few other Fun Run League races this season, though, up until today I hadn’t won one so it’s a nice feeling.”

Lewes Athletics Club saw both of their runners finish in second and third position.

Last year’s winner Lewis Sida came home 28 seconds after Heneghan, while club-mate John Stoddart finished third in 27-04.

In the female race, Chichester runner Rebecca Moore stormed home to win and was fourth overall with an impressive effort of 27-38.

Moore has had success in the area already in 2016 as she was the first lady to finish at Worthing’s inaugural Half Marathon earlier this year.

The talented runner, who lives just a mile away from the Beach Run course, was pleased to finish first and said: “I’ve just come home from university and have had a tough time with exams and other things going on, so it was nice to come back home and win this race.

“I live about a mile away and this was my first time competing here in over five years.

“I’m going away on holiday and then I think I’m going to take a little break before returning back to race again in September.”

Arunners chairman Phil McErlain was delighted to see a record number of racers for a third successive year.

He said: “I’m really pleased to see record numbers once again. The weather was lovely and that helps but it’s great to see the numbers keep coming here.

“The emphasis of the Fun Run League is participation and we want to keep increasing numbers in this race year on year.

“Running on sand is very difficult, so to see the record for a race win capped off a great night for everyone.”
