Records tumble in seafront relays

RECORD times were set at the third running of the annual Bexhill Seafront Relays on Saturday.

The first relay race was the 3x2,400m for both u15 boys and u15 girls. Fourteen teams lined up on the promenade for a keenly contested start but it was Aldershot who turned out to be the dominant force.

The girls race was virtually a one-club affair as the Aldershot B, A and C teams occupied the top three places, with three of the girls smashing the old course record which now belongs to Stephanie Twell who clocked 6.43.

The boys relay went to Aldershot A who finished just 12 seconds ahead of Hastings A who in turn edged out Aldershot C and B teams. Once again the course record was beaten by a few athletes, with Greg Smith from Aldershot running the fastest of 6.34

The senior ladies race produced a thrilling finish in which Crawley A pipped Aldershot B by a single second, with the winners' last runner Danielle Christmas setting a new course best of 6.44.

There was another close race in the ladies Vets age group, with Hastings AC finishing just 10 seconds ahead of Hastings Runners.

The longest race of the afternoon was the men's 5x5,000m, with Aldershot A taking no prisoners as they romped home by the massive margin of four-and-a-half minutes. The Aldershot B and C teams occupied the rest of the podium places, while the youthful Hastings AC team showed plenty of promise by finishing fourth. Aldershot also won the men's vets race.

The day had got under way with a fun run for under-12s which saw James Tidd (8.45) win the boys race and Aldershot club-mate Hannah Barefield (8.59) the girls event.
