Saxons started the Sussex Open Hockey League Division One contest brightly, taking the game to their hosts and rarely being troubled.

The sides were evenly matched, but Saxons had much the better chances. Jamie Busbridge found the Southwick goalkeeper in inspired form as he stopped several good opportunities in the opening 20 minutes.

Eventually Saxons found the breakthrough five minutes before half time as a well-worked short corner routine saw Alex Coombs slip the ball to Toby Reed, who slotted under the advancing goalkeeper.

Saxons’ advantage was short-lived, however, as almost directly from the restart, Southwick surged forward and rounded goalkeeper Stewart Feakes to level the game.

Southwick took the lead via a penalty flick in the first five minutes of the second half after the ball hit a foot on the goal-line.

An ugly challenge saw Reed sin-binned, but Saxons held firm during this time with man of the match Julian Buss making crucial interceptions and tackles.

Jon Meredith became an increasing influence and when he won a short corner late in the half, the same combination of Coombs and Reed produced a slick equaliser.

Seventh-placed Saxons will host Crawley II tomorrow (Saturday), push-back 1.30pm.

Saxons: Feakes, Cload, Buss, Reed, C. Meredith, S. Bunday, J. Meredith, Cornish, Coombs, Stainsby, Reece, Busbridge.
