Rescues reach record high due to recession

SUSSEX Horse Rescue Trust, founded in the 1960s and still run by Pauline Grant, reached an all-time high of 97 rescued equines before Christmas, thanks to the recession.

Based at Hempstead Farm, in Hempstead Lane, Uckfield, the trust has been inundated by calls from owners who have lost their jobs and can no longer afford to keep their horses.

Sanctuary manager at Hempstead Farm, Linda McDonnell, said: "We have 88 in at present, including 29 donkeys, because we have managed to find homes for some on loan.

"We have had people in tears, begging us to take their horses because they don't want to sell them."

It was a lucky day for one grey donkey recently. Cloud is 24 years old and Linda explained that it is usually difficult to rehome an elderly donkey.

But a place had been found for him as a companion for another donkey, and the future was looking bright for him.

One vital role that has always been undertaken by the trust is taking in equines that have been living in appalling conditions, or been abandoned and neglected.
