The club said they were ‘deeply saddened’ to learn of the former captain’s death at the age of 89 at the end of March.

Albert made 178 apperances and picked up a number of medals in a five-year spell for the club after joining in the 1950s from Haywards Heath.

A statement on the club website read: “Horsham Football Club was deeply saddened to hear that Albert King, thought to be the last surviving member of our post-war County League side, passed away peacefully on March 21st aged 89.

“A keen billiards and snooker player, only injury prevented him from being a virtual ‘ever-present’ in the side that he would later captain, going on to gain winners medals in the RUR Cup (twice), Metropolitan League and Sussex Senior Cup, as well as a Metropolitan Amateur Cup runners-up medal.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Albert’s family and friends at this sad time.”

Gorings Mead fell silent on Saturday ahead of Horsham’s Premier Division game with Newhaven as a mark of respect.
