Robertson passes wildcard test

Snooker star Jimmy Robertson chalked up his first ever victory in the venue stage of a world ranking event today (Monday).

The Bexhill cueman, ranked 53rd in the world, overcame the highly talented 14-year-old Zhou Yuelong 5-2 in the wildcard round of the Haikou World Open in China.

Breaks of 77 and 89 secured the opening two frames for 25-year-old Robertson before the baby-faced Zhou levelled the match at the interval with runs of 65 and 46.

Robertson, though, knuckled down and took the subsequent three frames for a win which sets up a last 32 clash against Northern Ireland ace Mark Allen on Wednesday.

“I didn’t know much about him so I googled him when I saw the draw. He’s a good player and he could play, but I felt I played pretty well myself,” a delighted Robertson told worldsnooker.com

It’s Robertson’s second appearance in the venue stage of a ranking event and first outside the UK having previously qualified for the Betfred.com World Championship last April.
