Rooks off to a flyer at Wings

Three goals in the first 10 minutes were more than enough to ensure the Rooks stayed six points clear at the top of the Conference South with a comfortable victory against a struggling Welling side.

Park View Road had not been an especially happy hunting for Lewes players and fans over the past few seasons, with just one point and one goal gained from the three clashes between the sides.

However the bogey was emphatically laid to rest in a stunning display in the opening stages.

Paul Booth set the wheels in motion with just three minutes on the clock, pouncing to sidefoot home his 29th goal of the season after Simon Womull's long-range effort had been brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Welling keeper Sonny Cobb, only for Dale Binns to get to the loose ball first and set up the league's leading scorer with an opportunity which he could not miss.

An excellent tackle by Gary Holloway on former Rooks favourite Francis Duku in the centre circle laid the foundation for the second three minutes later, with Booth latching onto the loose ball and powering into the area before unselfishly laying the ball square to an unmarked Hamid Barr, who duly notched his first goal for the club.

The third goal was even better, with Binns getting on the end of a move which he had started deep inside his own half to sweep home his second goal in four days, having not got on the scoresheet in his first 28 appearances for the club.

Inevitably there was a lull in the proceedings after that, and indeed the next real incident of note came nine minutes after the interval, when Ian Simpemba was harshly adjudged to have handled a shot fired at him from point blank range inside the area. However Steve Williams guessed right with Omari Coleman's penalty kick, saving low to his left before making an equally good block to stop the rebound from being forced home.

The home side kept plugging away and went close on a couple of occasions, but the Rooks always looked likely to extend their lead on the counter attack, and so it proved with eight minutes remaining.

Gary Holloway had earlier failed to keep his effort from close range under the bar at full stretch when getting on the end of Wormull's cross from the right, but when Binns' pace again cause havoc, only for the fleet-footed winger to hit the post when it looked easier to score, the midfielder was quickly on to the rebound and coolly slotted home his third goal of the season to complete the rout.

Lewes: Williams, Conroy, Hamilton (Barness 74), Robinson, Simpemba, Binns, Holloway, Davis (Kennett 85), Wormull, Barr (Groves 61), Booth.
