Rooks short of ideas

Missing Holloway and Drury who might have troubled the Wings with triangular passing manoeuvres, the Rooks looked short of ideas as indeed were the home side's forwards who included former Albion striker Richard Carpenter.

Both keepers were little more than bystanders for most of the game and when the few chances came, finishing was abysmal.

One of the few bright spots was Steve King's new left back, Marcel McKie, who is part of the QPR academy. McKie had the odd rush of blood to the head but was generally solid and particularly effective in the air.

The hosts had one of their few chances after five minutes when Jamie Day miscued in front of goal but with Welling, a physical side who often looked for the offside flag and never tired of using Route One, the Rooks must have known they were in for a tough afternoon.

Ian Simpemba turned in a good performance for the visitors but you could sense his frustration at colleagues' unwillingness to play with any width and Lewes were soon dragged down to Welling's level. This was a dire match.
