RUGBY: Green believes January will define Raiders' season

WORTHING Raiders Rugby Club get the new year underway on Saturday with a home clash against National 2 South third-from-bottom side Westcombe Park.

Raiders, who sit 10th, will be looking to put right an early season defeat by Westcombe, where they went down 16-12.

Worthing head Coach Will Green believes January will be a season-defining month and said: "We're full-strength and are looking forward to the game and to a strong performance.

"The next month is key for us. We have four games, with just one away, and I can happily say that January will define our season.

"If we have a good January, it will show where we are going to be and set us up for a strong finish. But a poor month will lead to a tough time in April."

Raiders' players have been training over the Christmas period, although Green understands it is a time for family also.

He said: "Some of the boys have been in working hard, although we are not a professional side and therefore I respect that a lot of the guys work hard through the year with their other jobs and want to spend time with their families.

"It has been more of a come and get rid of the turkey type sessions, but I can't expect some of the guys to travel an hour-and-a-half to do that.

"We went to Westcombe for the second game of the season after a good win against Southend. It was a tight game where a draw probably would have been fair.

"They would have been relieved to win and they'll be expecting us to come at them hard on Saturday."
