Barbarians savour Sussex Salver success

CHICHESTER RFC's fifths '“ the Barbarians '“ triumphed when they travelled to Rye for the final of the Sussex Salver against table-toppers Worthing IV.

Chichester were rocked back on their heels early as the first scrum saw Ian Stocks lifted off his feet and the drive from their forwards was felt by all of the Chichester eight.

Within five minutes Worthing executed some nice interplay and ran in a try, but missed the conversion.

This galvanised Chichester and following a lineout, the backs spun the ball to Glen Stanford, the No8, who darted around the Worthing back-line to put the ball down under the sticks.

Carl Jackson stepped forward and secured a further two points.

Outstanding probing runs and support from Toby Corbett at open side tirelessly drove deeper into Worthing’s defence.

Jackson slotted a further three points to take the score to 10-5 at half time.

The second half started with Worthing coming back fiercely at Chichester and within five minutes they had ran in a further try but again missed their kick.

The back-line was outstanding in their defence and tackling.

Worthing ate away at Chichester’s lead and kicked a fantastic drop goal just outside their 22.

But Chichester’s forwards drove hard into Worthing’s half and forced a lineout, taken by the reliable Kenny Lawrence and shipped down the back line to the safe hands of Ed Platt who ran over the try line to put the ball down in between the posts.

Another kick by Jackson made it 20-18 to Chichester with seven minutes to go.

Worthing forced Chichester back but Chichester battled their way forward until they were awarded a penalty, which Jackson slotted in between the posts – and Chichester were victorious.

The tackling, support play and defence was unquestionable and Tom Bluitt in the back line was sublime in his passing and awareness. Men of the match were Stanford and Bluitt but the whole squad and supporters all played their part.
