Beaten by Becks, but Blues have bigger fish to fry

Chichester rfc travelled away to mid-table Beckenham for a dead-rubber game knowing they would finish third in London one south whatever the result.

They were handicapped by a host of players unavailable or injured and did not want to disrupt the second team ahead of their Sussex Bowl final the next day. In the event a 37-0 defeat was no big surprise, nor a major worry.

The side showed nine changes although still had the core of the first XV present.

But a passionate performance from the home team, who’d suffered a heavy loss at Oaklands Park earlier in the season, and a series of very poor decisions from the very young official meant it was not to be the Blues’ day.

A 3-0 first-half scoreline was followed by Beckenham taking their chances in the second half while Chichester had three very harsh cards handed out - decisions which put a lop-sided slant on the game. Only Toby Golds and Billy Toone played to their level for Chichester.

Chichester have bigger things to focus on now - they take on big-spending East Grinstead in the Sussex Trophy final on May 19 at Eastbourne RFC.
