Blues can’t channel their efforts on island visit

CHICHESTER are still looking for their first win of the new National three London south east season after conceding eight tries in a 52-14 defeat away to rampant hosts Guernsey.

Inspired by some brilliant back play, Jordan Reynolds’ side tore Chichester apart with a fantastic first-half display that gave them a 33-7 half-time lead.

Then they dug in against the wind before scoring three more late tries.

Luke Sayer put Raiders on the way to the points with a brilliant 50m run which had the Blues on the back foot. Owen Thomas had the easiest of conversions.

Thomas, Guernsey’s new fly-half, soon set up a second try with a burst which knocked a gaping hole in the defence before slipping in winger Dave Davison for a 40m race for the corner. Thomas’ touchline conversion earned a 14-0 lead.

Home skipper Blair Campbell threw away a pass and Chi’s Ben Robson darted in for a long-distancescore converted by Alex Marsh.

But soon new Guernsey scrum-half Adam Nixon squeezed over for a score converted by Thomas for a 21-7 lead, and by the break Raiders had added two more tries, Owen Thomas and No8 Matt Thomas the men to score.

The second half saw Chichester rally with the breeze at their backs, but Raiders played most of the half deep in their opponents’ half.

Chichester scored another intervention try courtesy of Robson but Raiders responded with Matt Thomas forcing his way over behind the pack and then young Matt Armstrong was introduced for Sayer and inside a couple of minutes he was put in to score his first competitive try at this level.

There was still time for Cameron Craine to bulldoze over but the conversion was missed.

Chichester host Colchester this Saturday (2pm) at Oaklands Park - a big game as it is between two teams who have started with back-to-back defeats.
