Back rowers Connor Chatfield and Dave Wattam were joined by Sussex All Black hooker and Captain Ben Dewey in a side made up of 8 Sussex rugby clubs. Surrey on paper looked to be a very strong side with 9 of their squad coming from Battersea Ironsides who had lost only once this season in a campaign that saw them win Surrey 1, the Surrey shield and the National Junior Vase the final of which was played at Twickenham.

Despite the quality of the Surrey team it was Sussex who started the strongest with the forwards winning good ball before the backs probed with ball in hand and with boot with a stiff breeze behind their backs. In the first half Sussex scored 3 tries 2 by Crawley scrum half and 1 by the Hastings winger. The Hastings winger also added 1 conversion and 2 pens. In reply all Surrey could only muster was a solitary penalty to make the half time score 23-3.

Sussex made a plethora of changes at half time and the momentum changed hands with Surrey now playing all the rugby. Rizzie the Ironsides winger scored a hatrick with the Surrey 10 adding one conversion. In reply Sussex added 1 penalty for a final score of 26-20.

All 3 Sussex All Blacks showed their class throughout with Wattam giving a master class.
