FA Cup: Selsey's hopes are Lanced

Selsey's FA Cup hopes died with a woeful display and a 6-1 defeat at Lancing in the extra preliminary round.

After the early exchanges, Lancing upped their game and should have scored on 16 minutes when captain McLaughlin headed against the bar. Then Martin got clear of the visitors defence only to pull his shot wide.

Selsey keeper Sam Joyce was the busier keeper and proved why he is such an asset. He saved well from Boswell then he did well to stop a rasping effort from Hunt.

For Selsey, Scott Towers was played in by Rob Wimble but his shot was collected by Bryant in the home goal.

Goatcher put the home side in front on 38 minutes when he was given too much space.

With a breeze behind Selsey after the break, manager Richie Towers expected a stronger performance. But for the second time in two weeks, within ten minutes of the restart the game was gone.

Lancing scored through Joseph, Boswell and Turner to make it 4-0 and might have added more.

Towers made three changes – Barney Covill, Ollie Haggar and Regan Miles replacing Marc Hinshelwood, Towers and Matt Wood.

Joyce could do nothing to prevent Lancing going 5-0 up from the spot when Turner converted after Boswell had been tripped by Miles.

Rob Wimble had sight of goal but his header was comfortably saved by Bryant.

Marco Giambelardini struck home from the edge of the box after Wimble played him in. But Lancing regained their five-goal advantage a minute later through Hudson.

Selsey have to address some clear defiencies. Manager Towers was less than pleased with the performance and it is clear his team need to improve.

He does have two or three players out injured and is expecting the squad to get stronger.
