Frustrating game ends in victory

Hastings & Bexhill made it two wins out of two in Kent One on Saturday.

Against the backdrop of a gusting gale and a rarely silent referee’s whistle, H&B battled hard for an untidy 21-13 home victory against a Beccehamian side that had beaten them in all previous meetings.

H&B scored against the run of play after 10 minutes when Mark Piotrowski powered over the line and Kit Claughton made it 10-0 with a try following a quick tap penalty by Paul Sandeman.

A try and penalty brough Beccehamian back to 10-8 at half time, and the visitors went three points ahead playing against the wind in the second period at a time when H&B were down to 13 men.

Matt Harbord danced down the touchline to put H&B ahead again at 15-13 with 15 minutes to go and two Sandeman penalties sealed a hard-earned, well-deserved win.

A full report and pictures will appear in Friday’s Observers.
