Based on guidance from the RFU, plans are now in place to re-start rugby practice for the under-13 and under-15 Lionesses at Lewes Rugby Club from this Sunday.

Before lockdown restrictions, girls’ rugby was flourishing at Lewes and both the under-13s and under-15s were delivering strong performances against other teams within Sussex.

But given the recent gap in the rugby sporting calendar, Lewes Rugby Club are now looking for more local players to join the existing talent as part of an ambitious target of building two full girls’ teams to compete in the county.

The Lionesses coaches are fully aware of the constraints with Covid-19 and are planning touch rugby during training to gradually reintroduce the game without competitive playing at this stage.

Paul Johnson, under-15 coach, said: ‘We are looking to bring back as many of the regulars in addition to new players – there are a lot of girls that are really keen to get back into rugby as they are missing the physical benefits of playing as well as the fun and social side of the game.

“Prior to Covid-19, the Lionesses had been playing extremely well against established local girls rugby teams and it would be a real shame if we lost all that hard work and momentum.

“Our club is keener than ever to build the Lionesses teams with girls aged 11 to 15 who are more than welcome to join training sessions every Sunday from 10.15am at the Stanley Turner Ground, Kingston Road.”
