The ‘Boro boys enjoyed an ultimately comfortably 38-0 victory away at Lewes II on Saturday, making it a perfect nine wins from nine Sussex 1 games.

The side lead the way over Crawley now by nine points, though Saturday’s win was particularly pleasing given the side had suffered their first loss of the season going down heavily in the cup away at Milbrook.

“At half-time we were 12-0 up and Lewes came at us pretty hard so I was a little worried,” said head coach Clayton Saunders. But we’ve worked hard on our defence and the boys again stood up well and as they tired we ran in four more tries.

“I was wondering how a first defeat the week before would affect us but we put in a good performance.”

Saunders is especially happy with how a number of colts have stood up to the task. Will Scrase, a junior last year continued to impress with a try in the corner, and two colts Brad Game and Jamie Curtis both put in strong showings.

A try from Will Jordan, playing at outside centre, and a second by Seth Wise had ‘Boro ahead at half-time. And after weathering a Lewes storm Jordan dived over for his second, Scrase scored in the corner and Fraser Oliphant Hope capped another fine kicking performance, landing four of six conversions with a try of his own. Finally Si Burfend, who has impressed having to move from inside centre to fly-half and gave a ‘master class’ on Saturday burst through to wrap up the scoring.

Saunders said: “Our main goal of the season is promotion and then winning the league. But I’ve also set the boys the target of going the season undefeated which is a real challenge.” ‘Boro host Rye and then go to Seaford to complete the first half of the season.
