Midhurst sink Seaford on an afternoon of firsts

Midhurst welcomed Seaford for the first home match since losing their two-year home unbeaten record determined to bounce back with a Sussex division one win - and they edged it 10-8.

Seaford started the better of the two sides, but big tackling from the Midhurst backs stopped them and all Seaford could muster was a couple of long-range penalties which where missed.

There was a 20-minute gap towards the end of the half to wait for an ambulance after Cameron Schmidt dislocated his shoulder.

Early in the second half Seaford took the lead with a penalty, but Midhurst struck back strongly after great work from the forwards in getting fast ball out to the backs, allowing a great pass from Dan Hird to Matt Warken, who weaved his way through Seaford’s defence to place the ball under the post for a fantastic try.

The try was converted and a penalty followed to give Midhurst a 10-3 lead.

Seaford received a yellow card, then Midhurst were shown two. Seaford scored a late unconverted try to make the score 10-8, but Midhurst held on to record their first win of the league season and their first league win under new captain Harry Opperman.

Next up for the first XV is this Saturday at Eastbourne, while the second XV go to Horley.
