Mr Eyre’s Rousing speech inspires President’s Cup win

After a well worked warm up and mentally getting prepared for their last ever rugby game in an Oakmeeds shirt, the Year 11 boys were on the end of a rousing speech from Mr Eyre.

It worked as the Oakmeeds team won every single tackle, ruck and scrum during the first five minutes.

The constant barrage of pressure from Oakmeeds resulted in a brilliantly worked try with Ollie Lewis taking a sublime pass from scrum half Ben McLaren, who then used his slick hands to subtley pop the ball on his inside shoulder to Josh Atkins to crash over with no less than three of the opposition hanging onto him! (Jonah Lomu would have been smiling down on this).

Within no time two tries and one conversion made the score 12-0 to Oakmeeds. From the ensuing kick off Downlands woke up, and Oakmeeds were guilty of taking their foot off the pedal. The next score was a well worked piece by the Downlands forwards, resulting in their outstanding number 7 crashing over the try line. Mr Eyre and Mr Butcher rallied the troops under the posts and gave the boys the type of motivational speech that clearly the England rugby team needed at the World Cup. Ollie Lewis restarted with a high ball deep into the Downlands half. The ball was not caught cleanly and resulted in a knock on. In the scrum that follwowed the Oakmeeds pack dominated their opposite numbers and this was to set the tone for the remainder of the match; forwards dominating and setting up a platform to unleash the silky Oakmeeds backs. Wave after wave of Oakmeeds pressure took its toll on the Downlands players (who were playing well) and the inevitable winning tries came. Man of the match went to Bradley Hamilton, although special mention goes to Josh Atkins, Curtis Pummell, Nathan Gladding, Ed Schwyter and Dan Cockram. The team performance throughout the match was outstanding and every player from the starting 15 to the subs coming on stood up to be counted.
