VIDEO: All Blacks dramatically turn the tables

Burgess Hill were humbled 50-9 at Bromley at the beginning of October but they dramatically turned the tables in their first game of the new year.

The Sussex All Blacks emerged 22-17 winners, leaving director of rugby Ross Hallifax to say: “We showed greater heart today and put pressure on when Bromley wobbled.”

Hill trailed 10-12 at the break after both sides had scored two tries.

Bromley struck first after their umpteenth kick for the corner them to drive the hosts over their own line.

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession playing up the slope, Hill struggled to keep their feet and conceded far too many penalties in the opening quarter.

Despite losing Adam Rezazadeh to a yellow card, Hill came back to reduce the deficit to 5-7 when captain and hooker Ben Dewey charged down a clearance by the visiting scrum half and ran on to score wide out.

Bromley swiftly restored the seven-point gap as another powerful rolling maul took them over in the corner but Hill replied before half time when heavy pressure led to Rezazadeh cutting through the defence to score in the corner.

There was midfield stalemate for the first 15 minutes of the second half but then good carrying by props Tim Baglole and Jon Philpott enabled Hill to work their way upfield.

A yellow card for stamping gave them a numerical advantage and they took full advantage to seize control.

A penalty try put them 17-12 ahead after Bromley’s illegal steal from a ruck was rightly punished andthen Ben Herbe caught them nappoing with a quick tap penalty to make it 22-12.

Bromley rallied in the last 15 minutes but all they could manage was an unconverted try in the final minute when they took a leaf out of Hill’s book with a quick tap penalty.

On this occasion it was a little less forgivable that Hill’s players turned their backs as the penalty five metres out would have given the visitors a losing bonus point had it been kicked.

That blemish could not detract from an excellent result for Hill, who this week entertain fourth-placed Old Anchorians (2.15pm).
