Win or bust for H&B

Roger Roberts concedes that Hastings & Bexhill can forget about promotion if they lose on Saturday.

The rugby club will entertain unbeaten Sussex One champions-elect Uckfield knowing that nothing less than a win will do if it is to remain in with a chance of finishing second and going into a promotion play-off.

H&B captain Roberts said: “If we do lose this, second place will be gone. But more important than second place is sorting ourselves out really, we’re letting ourselves down with the games that we’ve lost.”

The odds are certainly stacked against H&B. Uckfield have won all 16 of their matches so far and have built up a remarkable points difference of +682 to sit 23 points clear at the top of the table.

H&B are 28 points adrift of Uckfield in fourth place with 10 wins and six defeats. They’ve also lost three of their last four games and it would have been four out of five had they not received a walkover against Brighton II.

Elsewhere, Rye could move into the top eight of the same division with victory at home to second-bottom Eastbourne II. Both matches will kick-off at 2.30pm and full previews of both can be found in tomorrow’s Observers.
