Two defeats since returning from their Christmas break has seen faint relegation worries resurface for Pulborough, although they currently sit nine points clear of the bottom three.

A 19-10 defeat against Heathfield & Waldron on Saturday followed a loss the previous week to basement side Lewes and has led to Wise to stress the importance of picking up points again.

He believes they are three or four wins away from safety and can take nothing for granted.

He said: “We have had a bit of a strange few weeks since we have been back from Christmas. The game Saturday was a vast improvement from where we were at Lewes.

“It was very disappointing and we were suffering from a Christmas hangover having not played for a few weeks.

“We talked seriously after the Lewes game about stepping up to the plate to secure our place in the league and it is not secure yet.

“It was a better performance on Saturday, but we need to get back to where we were earlier in the season to secure the place of where we want to be, and, I think, deserve to be, which is in London 3 South East.

“We are nine points off the teams chasing safety at the moment. The way it’s shaping up Lewes and Hastings will be in the bottom two and Gillingham Anchorians and Park House will be scrapping it out to avoid that third relegation spot.

“Having said that though, nine points is only two bonus-point wins, so we cannot take our position for granted. Not taking a point from the game against Lewes or at home on Saturday was not great and we are hoping that does not come back to haunt us.

“We have got to start putting in some good performances and taking points away from games. It’s been four games now since we last picked up a league points. We have to start now especially as teams below us can pick up points and the fact they have to play each other means they will.

“We play Bromley, Folkestone and then Gillingham, which is the first of our eight-pointers if you like when we play teams below us. I think we are three or four wins away from being completely safe, so there is a long way to go.”
