Sad demise of Cuckmere Valley League

The Cuckmere Valley League celebrated its centenary last season, but sadly the competition will not exist in its present form next year.

Blackboys, Caburn, Denton, East Dean & Friston and Laughton were all elected to the East Sussex League at the recent annual general meeting, and the committee has also accepted applications from Alfriston, Firle, and Selmeston.

The application from Nutley (one team) has been accepted in principle but may be subject to the condition that the position be reviewed at the end of the 2007 season.

There will now be 11 divisions of ten clubs next season, and one division of nine. The make-up of the leagues was due to be decided last night (Thursday).

Valley fixture and umpires secretary John Harmer, whose connections are with Alfriston, said: 'It's a sad day for a competition which you could win, lose or tie but not draw which was more exciting.

'We were prepared to soldier on with six clubs and play each other three times in a season but then Denton pulled out and it was decided at a meeting last week to wind up the league.

'We're having another meeting soon and are still hoping to keep something going in memory of the CVL, maybe an evening competition and the Tommy Lusted Trophy.'
