Sailing club grant bid clears first hurdle

Bexhill Sailing Club have edged closer to being awarded a grant from the National Lottery after Sports England moved their application on to stage two.

The club applied in June for funds towards refubishing the ground floor of the clubhouse at a cost of 182,000. This will enable the changing rooms to be extended and provide a boat house and storage area for the ever increasing number of sailors.

The application has been supported by Rother District Council and the Royal Yachting Association and has been well received by Sport England, the organisation responsible for distributing lottery money to sports causes.

If successful, the project is due to be finished for the start of the 2004 sailing season.

Earlier in the year, Bexhill were appointed a 'Volvo Youth Championship Club' which enables youngsters in the community to learn to sail and progress their sailing talents to the highest level. The club is also a Royal Yachting Association Recognised Sail Training Establishment which gives opportunities to everyone who wants to learn to sail by providing a variety of Sailing and Power Boat courses.

To progress to the 'Stage Two - Development' phase of the application means the project meets the sailing requirements.
