Saved from slaughter-but who is Basil really?

A DARTMOOR pony that originated from the Burgess Hill area in 1995 has been saved from slaughter by a Norfolk rescue centre.

Now Sussex Horse World readers have been asked to try to trace his history.

Julie and Ken Bassett, who run the Littletinkers rescue centre in Norwich, recently saved a dark bay 12hh Dartmoor pony, which they have named Basil. He has the freezemark 4U 9A on his shoulder.

Julie's friend, Carly Jones, said: "I have investigated his history but can only go back to 1995 when he was sold by his then present owner from his stable in Burgess Hill. We would love to know his real name and history.

"He has obviously changed since 1995, and we believe he is now more than 30 years old. The freezemark was put on him in 1973 in the Burgess Hill area and he was sold on in 1995. No further details are registered.

"There is no name for him and no name of his last owner.
