Saxons begin with a win

The Hastings club scored two late goals to scrape past Penguin 5-4 in a nine-goal South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One clash at Horntye Park.

He said: “It was a strange game. We never really got going so I was quite pleased to come out on top in the end. We had a good 10-minute spell in the second half, but apart from that it was a bit scrappy.

“It wasn’t a team game for some of it. A lot of it was 11 individuals trying to do it themselves. We do need each other to make our lives easier.

“It’s not often that we drop points at home and I said to the boys before the game ‘we can’t afford to do it today’. It was good to show a bit of character and show we can fight for a win.”

Saxons will take on Crawley II in their opening away fixture tomorrow (Saturday). Crawley lost 4-1 away to Brighton & Hove III last weekend.

“Hopefully we can go there, put on a good performance and score some goals,” added Cornish. Saxons forfeited their EHB Men’s Vase tie away to Camberley & Farnborough on Sunday.
