Saxons crowned Sussex champions

SOUTH Saxons were officially crowned champions of the Sussex Open Hockey League after an 8-1 demolition of Brighton & Hove IV.

Although a draw against second-placed Southwick in their previous game was probably enough for the crown, they made certain in emphatic fashion.

Player-chairman Tim Eldridge said: "I think we're going up to the league where a club of our size ought to be now. We're in an area where there aren't too many clubs in competition for players so anyone who moves here will see the facilities at Horntye and the level we're at and will generally be happy to join us."

A Des Smith hat-trick and goals from Eldridge, Danny Burnett, Rob Whitehouse (2) and skipper Jeremy Bunday secured the latest win.

Saxons play their final league match against Lewes on Saturday March 23 when they will be hoping to end the season unbeaten.
