Saxons determined to stay at summit

South Saxons have gone top of the table and are determined to stay there.

Saxons are a point clear of second-placed Eastbourne II in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One and five of their remaining seven games are at home - where they have a 100 per cent record so far.

“I don’t fear anyone at home,” Saxons captain Paddy Cornish said. “I’m certainly confident in our ability to win games and remain top. It’s an interesting but exciting time to be involved.”

Saxons’ next two home games could have a big bearing on how things pan out. They take on fourth-placed Mid-Sussex II tomorrow (Saturday) before welcoming third-placed Brighton & Hove III to Horntye Park on March 2.

“The games against Mid-Sussex and Brighton will be crucial, but I think we can take maximum points from them,” continued Cornish. “But we have to just focus on Mid-Sussex this weekend for now.”

Last time the sides met Mid-Sussex ran out 3-0 winners, but Cornish feels the score was a tad unjust. He added: “We were camped in their half and they scored three times on the break.” Charlie Campbell will come into an otherwise unchanged squad. Push-back is 1.30pm.
