Saxons homing in on second place

South Saxons can move into second place with victory in their first match for seven weeks on Saturday.

Currently fourth in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One, Saxons will host third-placed Lewes III knowing that a win will take them above second-placed Penguin, who are fixtureless.

A runners-up finish - the best Saxons can realistically hope for with unbeaten leaders Lewes II marching off into the distance - would net a promotion play-off against the equivalent-placed team in the Kent division.

Captain Pete Watters said: “Three points on Saturday sets us up for a nice second half of the season. We’re at home so I think we should be okay.”

Saxons haven’t played since their 8-2 thrashing of Crowborough on November 20. Their last four matches have been postponed, three due to the bad weather and the other following the death of a player from the opposing club.

Watters added: “I think we’ve got the stronger side in most positions and if we play to our abilities, we’ll win comfortably. If we don’t play to our abilities, I still think we’ll have a good chance.”
