Saxons hoping for a favour

South Saxons are hoping that this could be the weekend when they close the gap on the leaders.

The fixtures look favourable for the Hastings hockey club because Saxons are at home to ninth-placed Crawley II and pacesetters Horsham II are away to fourth-placed Penguin.

Worthing-based Penguin, in fact, were the last team to beat Horsham way back on November 19 and Saxons would dearly love them to do it again seeing as they trail Horsham by four points with five games to go.

Saxons captain Paddy Cornish said: “This could be a weekend where we get back in with a chance of having a shot at it. We’ve got to keep positive that we’re still going to have a shot at it in the last game.”

A Saxons side which needs three wins to guarantee the runners-up spot in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One - and with it a promotion play-off - won 7-2 in the reverse fixture against Crawley.

Cornish will revert to a 12-man squad with Sam Bunday, pictured, unavailable.
