Saxons rally to see off Lewes

South Saxons overturned a half time deficit to win 2-1 away to bottom-of-the-table Lewes III on Saturday.

Goals from man of the match Toby Reed and Jamie Busbridge gave Saxons a win which moved them up to second in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One.

Saxons enjoyed most of the possession during the first half, and although Alex Coombs and Will Orr combined well to force a good save out of the home goalkeeper, Lewes fashioned a number of chances.

The home side drew first blood with a goal which stemmed from a free hit outside the area, although Saxons captain Paddy Cornish felt there were two fouls under the umpire’s nose in the build-up which weren’t given.

Following an inspirational talk from Cornish and the old school half time oranges, Saxons came out with renewed spirit and were much the better team in the second period.

Coombs won a short corner and a well-planned move ended with Orr returning the ball to Reed, who calmly picked it up on the reverse and flicked it into the roof of the net.

The team continued the pressure and Dan Burnett crossed the ball into the area for Busbridge to neatly deflect the ball past the goalkeeper for what proved to be the winner.
