Saxons salvage late point

South Saxons scored another late goal to rescue a potentially precious point with a 2-2 draw at Worthing seconds on Saturday.

Will Orr’s deflected shot looped over the goalkeeper to ensure that Saxons avoided a third successive away defeat in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One.

Saxons had the majority of possession in the first half and Worthing’s resistance was broken when a well-worked short corner led to Alex Coombs setting up Jamie Busbridge for a simple finish.

Into the second half and having had two players warned about their tackling earlier in the game, the visitors lost Tudor Stainsby to a yellow card. This was quickly followed by another yellow for Toby Reed, who played the ball over head height.

Worthing managed an equaliser from a short corner shortly before Saxons were restored to 11 men. The away side then fell behind when a bad call led to Quentin Wedmore leaving a shot which snuck in at the far post.

Saxons did eventually find the leveller despite being down to 10 men due to a yellow card for captain Paddy Cornish. Orr’s goal was created by some sublime skill from Julian Buss.

Worthing also had three players sin-binned even though it wasn’t a bad tempered game. See Friday’s Hastings Observer for a full report.
