Saxons scored two goals without reply in the second half to win 3-1 against Horsham II and make it three consecutive South Hockey League Kent/Sussex - Regional 2 victories.

Having been promoted last term, Saxons’ aim has been merely to avoid relegation. But their united approach and strong team spirit has brought them 10 wins and taken them past the 30-point mark.

Saturday’s game soon turned into a frenetic spectacle, but the Hastings side deservedly took the lead when Alex Coombs struck a nice reverse stick shot low beyond the goalkeeper.

This wouldn’t be the instant knockout of a side such as Horsham, but it helped to serve warning and provide for the probing that was needed for that big blow.

Horsham drew level with a skilful and timely blow from a well-worked short corner routine, and the score remained 1-1 at half time.

The second half witnessed Saxons rally harder and they showed why Horntye Park is no easy place for any side to visit.

A second Saxons goal seemed to be not far off as they jabbed away at Horsham, with the likes of man of the match Dan Burnett and Paddy Cornish seeing shots well saved.

A well-worked Saxons short corner routine found Toby Reed, who looked to have scored but for a Horsham foot on the line. Coombs dispatched the resulting penalty flick to restore Saxons’ lead.

Saxons continued to work hard together and were always the more likely winners. Eventually a mazy run from Cornish and signature finish low into the corner sealed the victory.

The hard work has been shared well this season and has provided a team that can all hold their heads high. Their one remaining game is away to fifth-placed Kings & Alleyns this coming Saturday.
