Saxons set for season opener

South Saxons will begin the new hockey season tomorrow (Saturday).

The Horntye Park Sports Complex-based outfit will travel to league rivals Crowborough for a Sussex Plate first round tie.

Paddy Cornish, who continues as captain, said: “We usually get a tough game out of them. They’re quite a physical team and we’re scraping the barrel a little bit at the moment.”

With Jim Towers having moved back to Swindon, and Sam Bunday and Oscar Rogers at university, Saxons have lost three members of last season’s squad without bringing in any fresh faces.

On top of that, Pete Watters is likely to be sidelined for some time with a knee ligament injury, Dom Ford is unavailable due to family commitments and Rob Whitehouse is unavailable as his partner is expecting a baby.

Looking slightly further ahead, Saxons have a friendly away to Folkestone II next weekend before their South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One opener at home to Penguin on Saturday September 29.
