A Saxons side missing three regular players began the Sussex Open Hockey League Division One game at a fast pace and took control early on when Sam Bunday broke at speed down the right before finding Jamie Busbridge in the D and he made no mistake from close range.

Saxons pressed for a second goal, but were shocked when Penguin equalised against the run of play with a brisk counter-attack. Penguin added a second shortly after, leaving the visitors deflated going in at half time.

Saxons again started the half brightly and controlled possession in the early stages, however a disciplined Penguin proved difficult to break down and soon after extended their lead with another well-taken goal.

Although clearly bereft of confidence, Saxons continued to try to fight their way back into the game with man of the match Jon Meredith attempting to increase the intensity and dictate play from the base of midfield.

The Hastings side faced another setback, however, as they were found short at the back after throwing players forward in search of a goal and were punished again by a Penguin side which took its chances.

Saxons were given a glimmer of hope when Busbridge added a second following a mazy run from Paddy Cornish and they continued to press Penguin, attempting to exploit the flanks using the pace of Tudor Stainsby and Harry Reece.

But Penguin’s fifth goal destroyed any hope of a Saxons comeback and they will need to improve immediately if they are to challenge for promotion, starting with the visit of Lewes III this coming Saturday. Push-back at Horntye Park is 1.30pm.
