Saxons were brought crashing back down to earth after their fine win over second-placed King’s & Alleyn’s a week previously as they conceded 10 goals against the South Hockey League Kent/Sussex - Regional 2 leaders.

The Hastings club travelled to Eltham in South London with thoughts of possibly taking some points out of the game, but Saxons very quickly became aware that Blackheath were a well-drilled side and it wasn’t long before the hosts scored the opening goal.

Blackheath piled on the pressure, not giving Saxons any space to work with or time on the ball. This pressure and the speed of their forwards stretched the Saxons midfield and defence to breaking point with Blackheath finding the back of the net from short corners and open play.

By half time, Blackheath were six goals to the good. Saxons captain Paddy Cornish regrouped the team during the interval and Saxons - who have now fallen back into the bottom two - went out for the second period determined to return to their game-plan.

There was no let up, however, from a Blackheath side which is seven points clear at the summit. Blackheath scored a further four goals in the second half to cap what they described as their best display in 16 years.

Saxons: Harvey, Buss, Ford, Reed, Cload, Cornish, Coombs, Reece, Dray, Whitehouse, Bunday, Busbridge.
