Saxons target Plate glory

South Saxons have a golden opportunity to make up for the disappointment of missing out on promotion.

The hockey club will take on Penguin in the Sussex Plate final at Lewes HC on Sunday eager to atone for a 3-1 loss to Ashford II in a promotion play-off last weekend.

Saxons captain Paddy Cornish said: “It’s a good way to bounce back from the disappointment of losing a game like we did Saturday. But the team we’re playing are no idiots and they’ve beaten us once this year.”

Horntye Park Sports Complex-based Saxons finished second in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One, and were one place and 10 points above Penguin. The games between the two produced one win apiece.

“I think we probably will be slight favourites, but it’s a cup final so it could go either way,” continued Cornish. “It all depends on what team turns up on the day.” Saxons should be at full strength for the 12noon start.
