Scanlon stays cool to crack discus record

Lewes athlete Jake Scanlon was the star of the show at the Sussex Schools Championships at Crawley on Saturday.

On a hot day when athletes were eager to find what limited shade was available Scanlon, competing for the Brighton & Hove team, set the meeting alight with some magnificent discus throwing.

However, it wasn't Scanlon who provided the spark that set off the fire alarms and caused the meeting to be suspended as everyone was evacuated to the back straight! It proved nothing more that a toaster that set off the alarm bells.

Scanlon had completed his event beforehand and broke the championship record with his opening throw of 50.09 metres.

His second effort of 51.88m improved the record again and also smashed the 44-year-old Sussex under-17 record, and the prospects look good for him to improve on his fourth place at last year's All England Schools Championships when he travels to Gateshead next month.
