School pupils give £500 boost for riding for disabled

Around 15 disabled children benefit from Wednesday morning riding lessons at Southdowns Equestrian Centre, Upper Beeding, where the Riding for Disabled group is run by instructor Gill Brown.

The group relies entirely on fundraising and donations and last week the headboy and girl from Steyning Grammar School turned out on a bitterly cold morning to see the group in action and hand over 500.

The group was the chosen local charity for the year for sixth form fundraising at the school.

Head girl Camille Machin (17) explained: "Each year, the sixth form nominates one national and one local charity to benefit from the school fundraising efforts. The Southdowns Group is such a deserving cause, making a vast difference to the lives of those coming to ride, that everyone enjoys raising money for them."

The school's chosen national charity was the NSPCC, which will also receive a donation from the annual sponsored walk and a jailbreak event due to be held shortly.

Both Camille, and head boy Daryl Radwell (17) have some experience of horses. Camille rides and Daryl is currently working at weekends and during holidays at an Ashurst training centre run by Julian Marczak.
