Scratch championship draw

THE Sussex Inter-Club matchplay golf championship, sponsored for the first time by PAV i.t., the Sayers Common based computer specialists, broke new ground when the draw for the first and second round matches was held at the home of reigning champions Willingdon.

Willingdon host Sedlescombe in defence of their crown and have good cause to think in terms of going through to the third round.

Sedlescombe should pose few problems and a win would give Willingdon another home tie, this time against Selsey.

Graham Carn, who captained Willingdon to victory over Crowborough Beacon in the final last September, commented: "Two home draws are good, providing we beat Sedlescombe, which we should. We played Selsey at their place a few years ago in the first round and they knocked us out. But we are much stronger now."

Willingdon's squad is bolstered by the return to the amateur ranks of Tom Foreman after eight years as a professional. All last season's winning team are available and only a major upset can prevent Willingdon clearing the first two hurdles.
