SEAFORD STAND FIRM

County League TwoSeaford 0East Grinstead Town 0SEAFORD bounced back from the cup defeat by Sidlesham the previous weekend to show plenty of spirit against high-flying East Grinstead Town at The Crouch on Saturday.

Two flashpoints saw both Chris Stanyard and Darren Akhurst clash with EG goalkeeper Lee Whibley.

Whibley pushed Stanyard to the ground in the first incident and was shown a yellow card, but he escaped dismissal despite grabbing Akhurst round the throat and throwing him to the ground.

There was plenty of exciting football in a game in which manager Duncan Kneller left out Liam Keith and Luke Martin and recalled Mark Doherty and Ben Dartnall.

Seaford matched EG's physical approach and there were a number of heavy challenges.

Seaford's first real chance came midway through the first half when Dartnall was brought down in the penalty area but referee Nigel Baker awarded only a corner from which Woodward headed wide.

Seaford goalkeeper Graham Webb then pushed a fierce Matt Thorpe drive over the crossbar before Stanyard saw a header saved.

Into the second half Tom Callaghan was through but was robbed by a great saving tackle from Richard Foyle, then he saw another shot blocked by Whibley while Doherty was wide with a header.

Stanyard saw a shot deflected for a corner by Whibley, but the Seaford winger then almost handed EG a goal with a bad pass from which Tobin fired wide when well placed.

Roy Ranger picked up a facial injury and was replaced by Ricci Plastow before an Adam Kneller free-kick struck the wall after goalkeeper Whibley had picked up a back pass.

Seaford are home to Westfield on Boxing Day.

Seaford: Webb, Moore (R Plastow), Ranger, Knight, Woodward, Dawson, Kneller (Akhurst), B Dartnall, Doherty, Callaghan, Stanyard.
