Konta, seeded fourth in the Acapulco event, started the see-saw contest brightly and wrapped up the first set in 45 minutes.

The British number one was broken in the fourth and sixth games of the second set by her 33-year-old opponent and although she broke back in the seventh, Lucic-Baroni held her next serve to take the set 6-2 and level the match.

The Croatian was in control when she broke in the second and sixth games of the deciding set - but again Konta broke straight back, then did likewise in the ninth.

The Briton had two break points in the 11th game but failed to take them - and Lucic-Baroni then broke her again to book a place in the third round in two hours and five minutes.

Konta had previously won her first round match against Estonian Anett Kontaveit 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. It was her first tournament since reaching the Australian Open semi-finals last month. Next up for Konta in the hard court season is the Indian Wells Masters Event in California that starts on March 7. Her preparations will then begin for the clay court season that includes the French Open.
